Kingdoms of Camelot Beginners Guide

I wrote all of this several months ago in another domain, when I was Chancellor of the Dasatii, a small alliance that was being hunted down by an extremely powerful "bully" alliance named FORSAKEN. It all turned out well eventually, and I'm currently farming one of their former VCs, but at the time I wrote this, it didn't look so good.

In The Dasatii I had a small, very tough cadre of VCs and officers, and about 50 newbies. This all was written with the newbies in mind. Even if you're no newbie, there's still a lot of valuable info in here. Take the time to read it. You'll be glad you did.

Vince Lombardi had the slogan "MASTER THE FUNDAMENTALS" painted on the walls of the Green Bay Packers' locker room. He built an NFL dynasty in a small town that is really too small to host an NFL franchise. They just won their fourth Super Bowl.

Master the fundamentals, people.

You can skip over the tables and lists, and then read them in detail later if you get into that particular situation.

===========================================

1. NEVER EVER say anything at all in Global except a standard recruiting message, posted no more often than once every 30 minutes, and NEVER EVER respond to whispers from someone outside our alliance.

2. NEVER EVER attack anyone who's in an alliance or has more than half of your Might.

3. Spend all your Gold on resources using the Market.

4. Spend all your resources on building upgrades and your training queue. Once they've been spent like that, NOBODY CAN STEAL THEM. This is the reason why we want you to have 9-10 barracks in each city. We want you to have a training queue stretching into next month.

5. Keep your army in sanctuary at all times, except when you send them out to farm the barb camps (see below).

I'd like it very much if you could recruit for us, but that is not required. Just stay quiet, keep your head down, and BUILD BUILD BUILD. We have to act like what we are: a small group in an extremely hostile environment. We must stay invisible. Use Portals and Potions of Mist if you have them, or can afford to buy them.

So here is the Training Manual, Volume I.

Read it. Learn it. Use it. Own it.

REVIEW IT NOW.

===============================================

This is the first chapter in your training manual. Read it, study it, know it. You will avoid many disasters if you follow my advice to the letter.

ESSENTIAL FIRST STEPS

1. Click on your City view. Build a Cottage.

2. Click on your Field view. Build a Sawmill.

3. Click on your City view. Upgrade your Cottage to LVL 2.

4. Click on your Field view. Build a Quarry.

5. Build a Mine.

6. Build a Farm.

7. Click on your City view. Build an Alchemy Lab.

8. Build a Knights' Hall.

9. Build a Watchtower.

10. Build a Market.

11. Log in and play at least once a day. As you can quickly see, resources (Food, Wood, Stone and Ore) are the four springs from which all of your power will flow. Develop your resources flow by upgrading your farms, quarries, mines and sawmills in the "Field" view.

Follow quests, and when rewards are given, don't forget to claim them by clicking on the green check marks. This helps keep your resources up.

Focus on building up resources and upgrading your city buildings (in the City View) while under protection of mist.

If you are vigilant, occasionally you can spot a good deal on resources in your Market and you can buy them with Gold. Remember, Gold can be easily stolen but your Resources will always be safe if your Storehouse is big enough to hold them. Another way to keep Resources safe is to feed them into your training queue

If you have resources, and have 4 Barracks built, start building military units as resources permit. You get Might for every soldier you have (keep an eye on your food).

A good early ratio in your army is roughly 5 Supply Troops and 1 Militia per 5 Archers. Example: 500 Supply Troops, 100 Militia, 500 Archers.

As you continue to grow, a good ratio is 10 Supply Troops and 3 "infantry" (Militia, Pikes or Swordsmen) per 10 Archers. Example: 1000 Supply Troops, 100 Militia, 100 Swordsmen, 100 Pikemen, 1000 Archers.

You also need to protect yourself with Wall-Mounted Crossbows mounted on your Wall. For all of this, you need a LVL 4 Barracks, a LVL 6 Blacksmith, a LVL 5 Workshop and a LVL 6 Wall. Develop these four buildings in your city as rapidly as possible.

These are very basic, but following the quests can help keep you moving instead of waiting around for resources.

Important: the Alliance chat room is not very user friendly, so if you ask in chat and no one sees it, have patience. If someone is online it is probably not that they are ignoring you but missed it. Feel free to send me a message for advice if this happens. If I am not online, try whispering or messaging a player that is online. Whisper is done by typing their name after a slash (/name message) without the "Lord" or "Lady."

I will try to hang around as much as possible in the Alliance chat room whenever I'm online. Always try to ask your questions immediately when you see my comments. That way, you know that I will see your questions. Please be patient, I have a full-time job during the day and this isn't it! I will post a series of "Frequently Asked Questions" with answers, and other useful information, in your Inbox from time to time. Please read those.

----------------------------------------------

TAKE A FEW LOW LEVEL WILDERNESS SQUARES

Once you have built up an army with 100 Archers, you can start conquering nearby LVL 1 and LVL 2 wilderness squares. When you get 260 Archers, you can start conquering LVL 3 Wilderness squares. These will provide a small bonus to your Resource production. Multiply the level of the square by 5 and that's the bonus (expressed as a percentage) that it will provide. For example, if you conquer a LVL 1 Forest square, it will provide a 5% bonus to your Wood production; if you conquer a LVL 3 Hills square, it will provide a 15% bonus to your Stone production.

----------------------------------------------

HOW TO AVOID BEING "FARMED"

If you stick with the game long enough, and if you build up your Might and your Wall, people will avoid provoking you. They will leave you alone, and you can grow and prosper in peace.

You must avoid being "farmed." A strong player will raid your city with his army periodically (as often as once a day) and steal or "harvest" as many of your resources as he can. He will always be able to take your Gold from your city. A good way to stash Gold is to load it on Supply Troops (or Wagons once you can build those), and park your Gold in a wilderness square you control, along with the Supply Troops or Wagons that carried it, plus 100 Swordsmen and 500 Archers. The more Wilderness squares you have, the harder it is for your enemies to find your Gold stash.

For all other Resources, build up your Storehouse. Enemies cannot burn or destroy your buildings, resource producing squares (Farms, Sawmills etc.), your Castle, your Wall or your population. They can only take your resources when they raid your City.

Make it unproductive for an enemy to "farm" you by stashing a lot of your Gold in a wilderness square, and keeping your Storehouse upgraded (and resources spent down so that remaining stockpiles will always fit in the Storehouse). When you get your LVL 6 Wall, start building Heavy Crossbows on it. You can build Heavy Crossbows at the same time your Barracks is building normal military units (Archers, Militia etc.)

CALCULATION OF FORCES NEEDED TO CONQUER WILDERNESS SQUARES

Remember what Elmer Fudd says, "Be vewwy vewwy careful, we're hunting wabbits."

You will lose less Might if you attack the wilderness squares, or "wilds" in waves so make sure you have your Rally Point upgraded to at least LVL 2 and have 2 idle Knights in the city you want to attack from. Make sure your main body (with Archers) arrives no more than 30 seconds behind your sacrificial Militia or it will be a waste. Check the LVL of the wilderness square you want to conquer and compare it to the table below. For everything except LVL 1 wilderness, the first wave will be sacrificed.

Starting at LVL 5 Wilderness, it is impossible to completely avoid casualties in your main body. However, they can be kept to a minimum.

Follow these instructions to the letter, and you will keep your losses to a minimum. Ignore them, and your experience here at KofC will be very frustrating as your expensive armies, that take so much work and patience to build, keep getting slaughtered.

LEVEL OF
WILDERNESS ......... 1st WAVE ...... MAIN BODY

1............................ 50 Archers ........................................... (no traps)
2 ........................... 5 Militia ....... 100 Archers
3 .......................... 10 Militia ....... 260 Archers
4 .......................... 20 Militia ....... 600 Archers ..................... LVL 5 Fletching
5 .......................... 50 Militia ...... 1500 Archers ..................... LVL 6 Fletching
6 ......................... 100 Militia ...... 3500 Archers ..................... LVL 7 Fletching
7 ......................... 150 Militia ...... 7500 Archers ..................... LVL 8 Fletching
8 ......................... 300 Militia ..... 20,000 Archers .................... LVL 9 Fletching
9 ......................... 600 Militia ..... 50,000 Archers .................... LVL 9 Fletching
10 ....................... 1200 Militia .... 2000 Swordsmen + 88,000 Archers

Barbarian camps are tougher. They have 10 times as many troops but they have a lot of Food if you need it. A good way to get Food is to find a few LVL 1 and LVL 2 barbarian camps, and "farm" them for food every day -- you can even do it once an hour if you're going to be online for a while. You will also get Wood at a ratio of 1 Wood per 10 Food.

LEVEL OF
BARBARIAN CAMP

1 .................... 500 Archers
2 ................... 1000 Archers
3 ................... 2800 Archers ..................... LVL 6 Fletching
4 ................... 8200 Archers ..................... LVL 7 Fletching
5 ................. 15,000 Archers ..................... LVL 8 Fletching
6 ................. 33,000 Archers ..................... LVL 8 Fletching
(Alternate) .. 22,000 Archers ..................... LVL 9 Fletching
7 ................. 46,000 Archers ..................... LVL 9 Fletching
................... (Also need Knight combat skill of 76+)

For a LVL 1 barb camp, take along 500 Supply Troops to haul away all the loot. For all other LVLs, 1000 Supply Troops will be sufficient (since your Archers can also haul some of the loot, and there will be a lot of Archers). As your Featherweight Powder skill advances in your Alchemy Lab, you'll be able to take along fewer Supply Troops and still get all the loot. But Featherweight Powder research is NOT a priority. There are other skills you should be researching first.

1. Build up your Storehouses if you're going to be offline! If someone attacks you, these are invaluable for saving your precious resources. And as an added bonus, if your Storehouse is holding all of what you have except a little Gold, then why would they keep trying to attack you? Each LVL stores 100k of each resource, and you can research Shrinking Powder to increase what you store as well. (But like Featherweight Powder, researching Shrinking Powder in your Alchemy Lab is NOT a priority.)

2. Set your troops to hide in sanctuary, until you're strong enough to fend off your attackers.

3. Wall Defenses: There are two schools of thought. The first school of thought is called the "empty bag" defense: "The best defense is a good offense." Don't waste too much effort on defense, because if someone wants it bad enough they're coming in. The second school of thought is the "full lockbox" defense: "Keep all your eggs in one basket, and WATCH THAT BASKET." Throwing up a few thousand traps here and there will certainly deter any would-be attacker who's looking for a quick score. After all, if I just want to take what you have to build and feed my army faster, then I don't want to waste troops and Might on your 1000 Wall Mounted Crossbows. There is no better deterrent for a farmer than for him to lose his army.

4. If your Storehouse isn't going to hold everything you have, and you're online during the attack, you can send not only those resources your Storehouse won't hold but also your Gold to a wilderness square you control, until the incoming army has landed and left your city. To do that though, you will need to be online and you should have Eagle Eyes and a Watchtower in each city, upgraded to at least LVL 8. If you're worried you might be attacked while you're offline, you may send extra Gold and even resources to "reinforce" one of your wilds (with escorts), but they in turn may be attacked. If you have enough Wilderness squares, it's hard for your enemies to search them all.

5. You can also send your Gold and resources to your fellow alliance members. Figure out which VC or officer is closest to you and send them there. When the coast is clear, ask for them back.

===============================================

I like using secondary cities to produce cheap troops (Supply Troops and Militia) with LVL 1 Barracks. Use the capital to produce expensive troops (Archers, Cavalry, Siege Engines) with a top LVL Barracks.

On the lower left corner of your main screen, there is a Global chat room for every player in your domain. Just to the right of the word "Global" is the word "Alliance." That is the private Alliance chat room for our alliance. I will be in the Alliance chat room now and then, mostly in the evenings (7-9 PM Central time zone), and I will answer your questions.

Every time I appear in the Alliance chat room, I will announce that I've arrived and I'm ready to answer your questions. Fire away with your questions immediately.

Following is a link to a "Wiki" much like Wikipedia, but for Kingdoms of Camelot articles. The link I post below goes to their Wilderness article. Much of the information is contained in the first chapter of your training manual.

===============================================

SMALL SCALE "FARMING" OF BARBARIAN CAMPS

This is the second chapter of your training manual.

Once you have 500 Archers, 500 Supply Troops, and 100 "infantry" (Militia, Pikemen and/or Swordsmen), plus a Knight to lead them, you can start "farming" LVL 1 barbarian camps. Click on your Map view, and "drag and drop" the map in various directions, looking for the really small barbarian camp symbols.

When you let your cursor hover over a barbarian camp without clicking on it, you'll get a display similar to this one:

(687,439) Distance: 2.24
Barbarian Camp Lvl 2

Make a list similar to this one, on a sheet of paper or in a text file on your computer:

687,439 LVL-2 2.24
693,442 LVL-1 7.69
686,438 LVL-1 4.47

...

With 500 Archers, you can raid the LVL 1 camps. If you take 500 Supply Troops and 100 infantry with you, you'll be able to haul back the loot (amounts are approximate):

1000 Gold
100,000 Food
10,000 Wood
1,000 Stone
100 Ore

Each barbarian camp, like a wilderness, will "regenerate" 10% of its losses every six minutes after you leave. So you have to wait for an hour to get the full amount of loot when you raid it again.

Early in the game you will probably end up selling most of the Food you get this way, and using the money to buy other resources.

When you reach 1000 Archers, 1000 Supply Troops and 200 Infantry (plus two Knights to lead them, and a LVL 2 Rally Point), you'll be able to split the army in half and send each half to raid a different LVL 1 camp. These two raiding parties can march out simultaneously. This will work your way through the list of LVL 1 camps twice as fast.

Each of your two raiding groups would consist of 500 Archers, 500 Supply Troops and 100 Infantry (Swordsmen, Pikemen and/or Militia), led by a Knight.

But once you've worked through all the LVL 1 camps on your list, unite the two raiding parties at your city and send them out as one big army, with your best Knight as their general, working your way through the list of LVL 2 camps.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Always double check to make sure that you have the coordinates correct, and that you've sent the Archers along (not just the Supply Troops and Infantry), before you click on the "March" button. It's way too easy to lose an entire army by getting one number wrong on the coordinates (sending them to instant death in a LVL 9 Wilderness), or forgetting to send the Archers along.

I wrote all of this several months ago in another domain, when I was Chancellor of the Dasatii, a small alliance that was being hunted down by an extremely powerful "bully" alliance named FORSAKEN.

Tips & Strategies: Knight’s

I cannot STRESS the importance of your Knight’s enough. This is one of the MAIN variables that will decide the outcome & troop loss in a battle. Please read this thoroughly and APPLY the knowledge. Use your Knight’s wisely!

*Knight’s Hall: “Upgrade to increase the experience gained by your Knights each hour.”

Your Knight’s Hall needs to be at a lvl 9…period. If you are planning to be an attacker, or want a strong Marshal defending your city you need to get this leveled up. The sooner you do…the more skill pts. you gain for your knight’s and the better the over-all strength of your city & attacks.

“To pick your knights you need to click on your Knights Hall and "appoint" your Knight. Appoint Knights who play the game - They gain experience faster than those who do not play KoC. Once you appoint your Knights for your city, click on the "My Knights" tab. Here is where you pick which Knight has which role. Click assign role and assign the roles to your various Knights. Once this is done, click on "assign skill" and assign the right skill to the right Knight.”

How Many Knights?

*Your knight’s take gold. This should NOT be an issue if you use the Never Want for Gold strategy.

You should have 14 knights. This is 1 for ea. Of the 4 Roles you assign to your knights, and 10 for ea. possible lvl of your rally point. Even if you don’t have your rally pt. leveled up…Appoint your knight’s ASAP. They start accumulating points immediately. Believe it or not… you will eventually send all your knights out at once…lol Either hitting 10 barb camps at one time…or scouting 10 cities…or hitting 10 wilds for cresting hunting…or a combination of the above.

APPLYING SKILL POINTS: DOING YOUR KNIGHTS DAILY

FOREMAN - This Knight will use their Politics to help build your city more quickly.

*ALL skill pts. for this knight go on POLITICS. His sole purpose is to speed up your building time.

MARSHAL - This Knight will use their Combat to help quicken the training of your troops.

*ALL skill pts. For this knight go on COMBAT. Other than quickening your training time, this is the knight that is used as defense for your city when you are attacked.

ALCHEMYSTIC - This Knight will use their Intelligence to help run your Alchemist Lab.

*ALL skill pts. For this knight go on INTELLIGENCE. The purpose of this knight is to increase speed of alchemy builds and strengthen the elements in your Alchemy Lab.

STEWARD - This Knight will use their Resourcefulness to improve your Resource production.

*ALL skill pts. For this knight go on RESOURCEFULNESS. Like it states… this will increase your resource production!!

When you read the above you can see the importance of each of these knights to the over-all strength of your attacks/defenses/cities.

*ALL skill pts. For unassigned knights go on COMBAT. These are your attack knights.

KNIGHT’S LOYALTY:

You need to reward your knights with gold. This will increase their loyalty which will increase the speed of their XP and gain skill pts. quicker. You can do this once every 24 hours but it is maxed out when you reach 100 loyalty. (Though your knight’s loyalty maxes out, you will always continue to gain skill pts.) Just because you can do it so often doesn't mean you do. You do this as you have more gold available. I do it every few days when I know my gold is going good. It is important to do this for all of your knights over time. I usually do my 4 assigned knights and 3 idles regularly in the beginning and then I randomly do my other idle knights.

SECRETS REVEALED…lol EXTRA SPECIAL TIPS

*You can assign MORE knights early on to your cities. When you get your 3rd, 4th, 5th city you can reassign them there and they have already accumulated many skill pts.

*During an attack you can unassign your Marshal and use him in combat. He is ALWAYS your strongest combat knight. During war use your special trainings you received as gifts, or from Merlin on your unassigned Marshal and he will be your most powerful knight.

EXAMPLE: When I am on-line playing and doing serious attacking, I unassign my Marshall and assign a different high lvl knight as Marshal. Then I use this knight…who will have more combat pts. then any of the other knight, to do stronger attacks. When I finish and am going off-line, I switch the knights back…so that my strongest combat knight is protecting my city.

IF YOU DO THIS…DO NOT FORGET TO ASSIGN A MARSHAL. This is a BAD mistake…lol

*When you get a lvl 10 Alchemy Lab…you can get a lvl 10 Eagle Eye. When you scout a person it will give you their last log in time. But, before you get a lvl 10 Eagle Eye, you can unassign your most intelligent knight, your Alchemystic, and send him out when scouting. This will give you the last log in time. Your Knight should have 90 intelligence for this to work.

In addition, you can get the last log in time by scouting someones wild…not their castle. This works at level 9 Eagle Eyes.

*If you find yourself with a particularly weak knight because you didn’t allocate skill pts. properly in the beginning… or assigned him later than your other knights…you can assign this knight as your Marshal for a period of time to increase his skill pts. quicker.

Attacking guide

Scouts
They are used to look at other cities and most already know this but they are also good at other things as well. If someone is scouting you the only way to stop them and kill their scouts is is you are defending with more scouts than them.
I also use scouts for 2 other things. First I use scouts to take out traps. 1 scout per trap, now you can use MM or Supply troops or any other troops you have to take out traps but the scouts are faster than anything else and you can send your main attacking right away… I hate telling the bad guys I am coming and give them extra time.
The other thing I use scouts for is defense.. keep 1 in any city your are defending (explained in next message)

Pike
A great layering unit something every defending city should have. They are best against regular calvary but with enough of them can also stop HC. Pike have a 2 death 1 kill with cavalry and a 3 death per 1 kill for heavy calvary. When you scout someone and your scouts die this is the best unit to use to kill scouts. They can kill a crap ton of scouts without losing many if any troops. But not only will they kill all the scouts the next unit that will run out and say hi to them (after the scouts are dead) is the regular Calvary… and nothing kills regular Calvary better than pike. If I am attacking in the blind (they killed my scouts) I will send 5k pike in… now if they have traps and what not I will take them out with the pike and other field defenses… but once they are gone 5k pike will kill all of there scouts and now u can send a scout in and see what u are up against.

Archer
Bang for the dollar this is the best unit made. It is pretty good on attacks and also a great defender. You can barb with them. The Archer is the work horse of this game. Although other units can carry more or are faster or have me defense or more attack. The archer is the most well rounded of all troops. As long as you have other troops to stand in front of your archers they are a great defense.
When attacking a player with millions of troops nothing will kill everything in 1 wave. But 100k archers marching in on a layered defense will still kill about 40k or there archers. If you and the rest of the alliance can send 60 waves at a player that will take out about 2.4 million archers (if the bad guy had that many) I like to send 10% swords and 90% archers.. the swords are alittle faster and have better defense than the archer and will help the archers get off more shots and kill more (even though the swords will kill nothing). When barbing with Archers I attack level 4-7 with archers. the ratio of how many archers to send per level changes are your researches go up. By the time you have Fletching and the what not up to level 10 you will only need 40k archers to take out a level 7 barb (make sure your idle knight is above 100 skill).

Swords
Swords have good defense and are faster than Archers but are not fast enough. If you send 100k swords against 100k archers every sword would be dead before the swords can reach the archers. I use some swords with my archers (see above) and I keep them in my cities I am defending in as they are 1 more layer to defend with. If the guy you are attacking is not defending and just has Xbows to take out you can use swords to take the Xbows out. You need to send a minimum of 3 swords per Xbow

Calvary
This is a great unit but it has its weakness. It is fast and can carry a lot. They are great for long range raids. They are also a great barbing unit. Use 1k for level 1 barb and 2k for level 2 barb and 4k for a level 3 barb. Also keep 1 in every city you are defending.

Heavy Calvary
This is a great unit. They take a long time to build and they eat a lot but WOW they can do some damage against the bad guys. If the guy did not layer his defense and all you are facing is 250k archers… just send in the HC and 100k HC will kill off all of the archers. the defense for this is a good layered defense. With 200k Pike and 400k archers the HC will run into the pike (kill like 20-30k pike) and then just die with all the archers hitting them. Get rid of the pike and the 100k HC will kill off about 310k archers. You can also barb with HC. 1K for a level 1 and 2 k for a level 2 and 3k for a level 3.
When I send in the HC I like to send regular Calvary with then in the ratio of 10% regs and 90% HC. The regs will hit the spiked defense first and take them out, the Xbows and archers will take out the the regs. Then the HC run up and kill the Xbows and archers. this way you will lose less HC. I have also been told archers and HC are a deadly combo but have not played with the ratio and need to do some testing. If any of you have info on archer/HC will you please send it to me?

Supply wagon
You need them (enough said)

Balli
The best defense unit in the game, as long as you have a layered defense. Like the archers they are great at killing from a distance but do not like melee type units in there face. Calvary or HC will take them out if they are get close enough. As long as you have other troops ready to run out and say hi the balli will chew up the bad guys. The Balli has a couple of things that hurt it. 1- it is slow.. although they will kill a lot of troops if you attack with them it takes a very long time for them to get there and unless the guy is close most likely by the time the balli arrive you will be facing a fully reinforced city. 2- they are PIGS they eact a crap ton of food and unless you are a barbing master it will be hard for you to keep more than 100k at a time without running out of food. You can also barb with them (ratio is with 100 skill knight and max level researches) 28k for a level 8 barb and 54K for a 9 barb
Smart knight or scouting knight
This is a trick I learned from pino.. what you want is one of your idle knights with intell points 74+. This is a key to scouting cities. It will give you the last login of the player you are attacking. The more info that you have about a player the better off you are. There are several ways you can accomplish this. You can just assign the points, you can use a mirror of knowledge, or the fountains to reassign the points. This knight is only used for scouting so remember his name . he is a vital asset to have

How to kill defence units
spike = 1 cal 1hc 1balista or 1ram
caltrop= 2mm 2swd or 2pike
trap= 1mm
wmc= 4mm and 5swd
treb 1 balista 1 cat or 1ram

Handy tips-

Concentrate on your resources, build 4 x Farms, 3 x Quarry, 3 x Mine, 3 x Sawmill to begin with. This will give you a good base to build upon.

Build 6 cottages only, 1 of everything else and knock down the tavern as soon as it’s built (it’s useless!!) Then fill the gaps with barracks but only upgrade 1 of them for now. This means that you will have enough space for people to live and your army will build super quick in the future.

Concentrate on your Knights Hall and Watch Tower in the city. You want to know who’s attacking you and enable’s you to make your knights stronger.

When you’ve built you’ve Alchemy Lab, research the top 4 for now. The rest will follow – Resources are key in the game so getting them to speed up is a great idea.

In the Castle change your Tax rate to zero and claim gold (do this every time your happiness hits 90). But remember to change it back to 20% when your offline. Makes you rich so you can afford the research in the Alchemy Lab. You’ll also be able to use the Market if you need to.

Most importantly… HAVE FUN!! Use the alliance chat to kill time and make some friends. We don’t bite (well sometimes!)
